There
are many ways to carry luggage on a bike, and many types of trailer.
Except in very flat areas, and for light loads, those that attach to the
back axle are not advisable - for every attempt to move forward, the
trailer exerts an equal and opposite pull. Even on the flat, we found it
very difficult to even set off when fully loaded. A trailer that
attaches to the seat post, as shown here, does not present the same
problems. The problem with this type is that very rough or uneven
surfaces (such as are universal in Britain) can uncouple the hitch -
uncoupling is a deliberately introduced safety measure. Even if you
prevent uncoupling, you experience a great deal of bouncing at your
rear. However, these type trailers (we have a flat box type) are
excellent on the continent, where the roads are good.
