MAKE THE ROADS MOVE NOT THE
TRAFFIC
|
|
Ideally, I should like to have moving roads
between towns, so that a car would drive onto the road, switch off its
engine, and be carried to its destination. Until we have the technology
to bring this about, we can convert motorways into rail tracks and load
cars onto low loaders. These railtracks will just be for car transport,
and will be additional to railways we already have, which carry
passengers without cars, and freight. |
|
|
|
NARROW THE ROADS & MAKE
CYCLE TRACKS |
|
Within towns and all residential areas, the
part of the road available for cars to be reduced, and broad cycle lanes
added at each side. |
|
|
|
RESTRICT SPEEDS |
|
The speed limit in towns for cars to be 15mph
and in residential areas 5mph. This will entirely eliminate road
accidents. |

SEVERE PENALTIES FOR
HARMING CYCLISTS AND WALKERS |
|
Whoever harms a cyclist or walker will incur
the severest penalties. Loss of licence and impounding vehicle being the
least of it. |
|
|
|
ENCOURAGE WALKING AND
CYCLING AMONGST CHILDREN |
|
Employ walking and cycling wardens to escort
parties of children to school in all weathers. Drying rooms and
changing rooms can be provided in the schools for wet clothing. |
|
|
|
CYCLE PARK AND RIDE SCHEMES |
|
Fleets of cycles should be available outside
every town so that cars do not need to be taken into town centres.
Cycles can be ridden to destinations and parked. Cycle wardens can move
the cycles about if too many end up in one location. Cycles would be
common property for a person to keep and ride as long as needed. |

Provision to be made for
cycles on trains and buses
At the rear of every train
should be a cycle van provided with racks. At the rear of buses should
be cycle racks. This would free up the cyclist to go further afield, and
to combine public transport and easy accessibility to town centres. At
present it is practically impossible to go anywhere on a bike. See
however the excellent service provided by EUROPEAN
BIKE EXPRESS and
YORKSHIRE
BIKELINER - both of which transport cyclists abroad.
The BIKE
HOD which enables
heavy loads to be carried with ease. |
