Subduing a Rebellious Spirit
concerning the subjugation of a rebellious spirit according to writ
TO DESPATCH A REBELLIOUS SPIRIT
First set up your working space: this must be in whatever mode or discipline you practise, as you must be in command of your environment. Be sure that you provide a separate place for the spirit to materialise, if it is going to, as you do not want it charging around loose. Standard magical practice is to provide a circle as the working place for the adept, and a triangle outside it to the east for the spirit. Form your triangle out of three strips of paper fastened together and write these words on the sides -
left - ANEXHEXATON - right - TETRAGRAMMATON - bottom (facing up) - PRIMEMMATON.
Inside the triangle inscribe the name MICHAEL by putting some of the letters into each corner. Although witches work in an "open" circle, for this ceremony your circle should have a physical border - this can be rope or string, or if the floor is suitable, chalk. If you want to chalk some words round the periphery use
SHADDAI EL CHAI - TETRAGRAMMATON - ARARITA.
Inside the circle have a drawing or other representation of the kabbalistic cross. Wear a black gown, and when consecrating the four corners begin in the east as usual but do not consecrate north. In the north, place a candle and make a sacrifice of a living thing (you can use an egg), calling upon the spirit and telling it you are now going to summon it. If you know its name, use it, or if you have yourself given it a name or title, use that. Ignite some incense in the north. Pick something that will protect you if it is a rebellious spirit.
Call down the powers of your god or goddess and do everything you usually do to make yourself ready for magic. When you are ready, call upon the spirit eleven times, ringing a bell after each one. Concentrate upon the triangle. You should feel, hear or see the spirit's presence. If you don't, try calling again or aid sight with visualisation (flagellation is also a handy aid to seeing things that aren't there!)
If the spirit is very rebellious or very powerful it might appear somewhere other than in the triangle - this is very dangerous and if it happens you must command it to depart with all the power at your disposal - this includes your fellow adepts. You are all in great danger if the spirit is wandering about loose and running away is not recommended - the spirit will attach itself to a fleeing form and will be a deal of trouble to get rid of. So stand firm and threaten it. Make sure everyone understands this from the outset and is prepared. Have some handy curses ready. I give you some at the end of this.
If you are dealing with an ordinary class of spirit, as you probably are in this case, it will appear in the triangle or otherwise make its presence felt, and you can talk to it in whatever manner you feel appropriate.
However, if it is a cohort of the Prince of Darkness, it will try to get you to let it out of the triangle, saying it is cold or lonely or whatever. Or it may try to get you to leave the circle.
No matter how sorry you feel for it don't do either of these things. Deal with its problems and any requests it has, but make it clear to it that this is not its home and that its true destiny lies elsewhere. Let it know it has only a limited time to make its requests and then you are going to send it on its way. Be firm about this. If it won't give a message it hasn't got one, letting it out isn't going to get anyone anywhere.
When you have heard and conversed with the spirit and put its mind and its fears at rest (it might be a good idea to have someone write down anything it says - ask it if it knows where there is any buried treasure, they often do) or if it has not communicated with you, when the time limit is up, dismiss it in a kindly but firm way, saying:
"O Spirit (or its name), seeing that you have duly answered all my questions (or told me all your fears and requests) (or been given an opportunity to speak but decided not to do so) I hereby license you to depart without injury to man or beast. Depart, I say, to your proper place Go quietly, without making a fuss, and may peace remain for ever between me and thee (or between thee and the inhabitants of this place), (or between thee and "x" - the person who lives in the house).”
Close down the triangle of art by ringing the bell eleven times, saying
"I dismiss thee O Spirit (or name) and close down the triangle of art"
Then close the circle in the usual way, beginning with north which as you remember was linked with the spirit - so say
"thou hast (or you have) been given the opportunity to be heard, O etc, I have heard, and I have dismissed you to your proper place, there to dwell in peace with me and mine forever".
If the spirit starts to shape-shift or frightens you in some way point your sword or ceremonial dagger at it and say:
TE NUNC TRANSFORMA IN FORMAM VERAM QUOD ELUDET SPECIES MENTEM MEAM.
If that doesn't work, and things get worse, say (pointing sword at it)
MIHI TE EST AEQUUM PARERE IN ANGELORUM SEPTEM NOMINE: MICHAEL, GABRIEL, RAPHAEL, URIEL, CHAMAEL, HANIEL, ZADKIEL
If you have dismissed it and it won't go try this:
MONSTRUM E LOCIS EMISSUM SUMMIS ABI NUNC EX OCULIS MEIS
If it still gives trouble:
MEAE ARTIS NON IMMEMOR ET NOMEN DEI LENTE LOQUOR ALOAH-VA-DAATH SHADDAI-EL-CHAI YOD-HE-VAU-HE ELOHIM TZABAOTH TRANSFORMA TE IN FORMAM VERAM
While you are saying (shouting) this you must transform yourself into a frightening spectacle, summoning powers of unreason, anger, frenzy. When you have said the words, revert to the vernacular, swearing shouting and treating the spirit as your worst enemy, saying that you have been prepared to treat it in a reasonable, helpful way, but that as it has defied you,
I HEREBY DESTROY ALL YOUR POWERS AND CONSIGN YOU TO OUTER DARKNESS
Then leg it as fast as you can!
